There will be a Coney Island Anti-Violence Collaborative (CIAVC) meeting tonight, August 9, from 5:30-9 p.m. at Liberation Diploma Plus High School at 2865 West 19th St.
The CIAVC, led in part by Urban Neighborhood Services, Inc., consists of a coalition of residents, non-profit organizations, businesses, and others who gather to address gun violence in the Coney Island area.
The CIAVC first started holding meetings in 2013 and currently hold monthly meetings.
Among other events, the CIAVC will host an anti-violence youth academy on August 14 for boys between the ages of 13-18. According to an event page on Facebook, the teens will get a chance to learn about how violence affects the community. The event will provide them with an opportunity to “become a change agent.” At this event, Lunch will be provided and there are stipends for participants, according to the event page.
