Artists meticulously carved and molded sand structures on the beach Saturday during the 27th Annual Coney Island Sand Sculpting Contest.
The competition, which features a grand prize of $500 and smaller prizes for runner-up slots, took up most of the sunny but warm afternoon as temperatures climbed into the mid-80s. Spectators walked around to browse the various structures as they were being formed. A winner has not yet been announced.
The annual event is presented by Neptune/Sixth, Brooklyn Community Services, Astella Development Corp., and the Alliance for Coney Island.
