Four free shows have been added to the 2017 SummerStage season — and they’ll take place right at the Ford Amphitheater, The City Parks Foundation and local elected officials announced.
British star Marsha Ambrosius and R&B singer-songwriter Ro James will open the new shows on September 8 at the amphitheater. One day later, soulful R&B star Freddie Jackson and neo-soul star Angie Stone will perform.
On September 15, Shirley Caesar will perform alongside Damien Sneed. The grand finale will be two days later when hip hop takes the stage as EPMD and Slack Rick The Ruler headline with Black Moon and Smif N Wessun.
The Parks foundation facilitates the SummerStage season, which consists of free shows across the five boroughs. Mayor Bill de Blasio, City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams, and Councilmember Mark Treyger collaborated to help make the shows possible.
“We are thrilled to partner with the City of New York to bring free live music and entertainment to the Coney Island community as an extension of our SummerStage season,” City Parks Foundation’s Executive Director Heather Lubov said in a press release. “For years we have invigorated Coney Island’s parks and coastlines with our free sports, education, and community development programs, and we are proud to now bring SummerStage, New York City’s largest outdoor performing arts festival, to this neighborhood for the first time.”
The shows will fit into a packed schedule of entertainment options this September at the Ford Amphitheater. Click here for a full rundown of other events coming up in September at the amphitheater.
