Wahlburgers vows to re-open in Coney Island under new franchisee

Wahlburgers will return to Coney Island under a new franchisee, a company spokesperson told Coney Island News.

The Massachusetts-based chain shut down its Coney Island rooftop location in September, citing plans to restructure. But now they’re ridding themselves of the Stillwell Ave. location and franchisee altogether due to “failure to meet brand standards.”

“We terminated their franchise agreement,” a spokesperson said. “The lease and location are the responsibility of that franchisee. We look forward to returning to Coney Island with a different operator.”

Meanwhile, a sign was posted on the front of Wahlburgers’ now-former location.

“Please take notice that in accordance with the notice of termination dated October 10, 2017, Landlord Singer Coney LLC has reentered the premises and taken possession thereof,” it reads. “Please take further notice that you are prohibited from entering onto the premises.”

When asked where in Coney Island the new Wahlburgers would be located, the spokesperson said the company had no further comment. It remains unclear whether Wahlburgers will seek another rooftop spot — one of the few bright sides of the location.

A spokesperson told Coney Island News in September that the company did not believe their Coney Island outpost would be closed for more than a year, but the timetable on a new open date has not yet been announced.
