Coney Island is hitting the big screen.
Wonder Wheel, the anticipated film based in and around Coney Island in the 1950s, debuts Friday in theaters.
The film’s arrival culminates a year-plus project after filming started in the fall of 2016. Filmmaker Woody Allen transformed signage and other scenery in Coney Island to reflect a setting reminiscent of the neighborhood in the ’50s.
The film features a cast of well-known stars such as Kate Winslet and Justin Timberlake, but early reviews have been mostly disappointing. The film has a 40 percent “Tomatometer” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
